They might not be fun to walk on, but seeing them hanging from trees or lying on leaf-covered forest floors is always a treat.

Looking at them up close, they’re pretty complex structures, making learning to draw a pinecone difficult.

Don’t worry; it can be much easier than expected once you know what to do!

How to Draw A Pine Cone

Step 1

When learning to draw a pine cone, it’s best to draw it section by section.

Pine cones have many separate scales, making drawing a pine cone a little intimidating.

This drawing may require some patience, but it will be worth it in the end! In this first step, we will start with the pinecone base.

Again, we’ll draw each stair individually, and we will draw each one with curved lines that curl around the floor. For now, we will draw 5 stairs that connect to form the base.

Once you’ve drawn that first staircase to look like our reference image, you’re good to go!

Step 2

In this next part of the pinecone design, we’ll add more scales.

Essentially, these stairs are drawn precisely as you drew the previous ones, with the main difference being that they are taller.

The idea for this pinecone is that it gets narrow at the bottom but broader as you go up. As you add this scale section, try scaling it, so the pine cone gets thicker as you go up.

Step 3

The third part of this guide to drawing a pine cone focuses on finishing the body of the pine cone.

To do this, you can add individual stairs as in the previous steps.

Remember to do it, so it gets thicker as it goes to the top! It can be tricky to get it right, so be sure to refer closely to the reference image as you draw.

Step 4

You’ve finished drawing the body of your pinecone yourself, so for the next few steps in the tutorial, we’ll end with the branch and leaves it’s attached to.

The branching begins at a single point and then branches into two sections. Use curved lines for these branches to make them look like our example.

We will then complete this step by adding the leaves for the pine cone. These leaves are long, thin, and numerous, so start pulling them from the ends of the branches. Then we can complete some final details in the next part!

Step 5

Before we start coloring your picture, we have some details and finishing touches for you in this step of our how-to-draw a pinecone drawing guide.

As mentioned above, there will be a lot of leaves on this pinecone to give it more volume, so we’ll add more to finish it off!

Add more long thin leaves, and you can add even more than we did if you’d like!

So you can continue, but you can also add some personal information. You could draw other pine cones hanging nearby, or you could create a beautiful forest background.

These are just a few ideas, but there are many details you could add!

Step 6

This is the final step of your pinecone drawing, and in this one, we will finish it with some great colors! In our reference image, we used shades of brown for the scales and slightly darker for the attached branch.

Then we finished with a darker green for the leaves coming down from the pine cone.

We have chosen these colors, but you don’t have to choose precisely these colors! Change the shading a bit, or use your colors. Once you know the colors, you can have fun choosing the art mediums you want.

You can go bright and bold with colored markers and acrylics or keep it more muted with some watercolors and colored pencils.
